Advocacy Kit on Gender in Mine Action

Thanks to the generous support of the Canadian Government through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Swiss Campaign to Ban Landmines’ Gender and Mine Action Programme (GMAP) is pleased to present an Advocacy Kit on Gender in Mine Action.

This kit has been developed as a tool to empower local women’s grass roots organisations to advocate for gender mainstreaming in mine action in mine affected countries. GMAP believes that local women’s grass roots organisations hold vital information about women, girls, boys and men in mine affected communities, and that their involvement in the definition of mine action strategies (at the local and international level) and in programme implementation will bring great benefits for those living with the scourge of landmines and for the international mine action community in general.

The kit is comprised of the following 7 documents:

1. FACT SHEET “Arguments for gender mainstreamed mine action”:

Organisations working with gender mainstreaming processes are often met with resistance and scepticism from various actors. Gender experts repeatedly have to justify their work and why gender mainstreaming is needed. The fact sheet provides the Gender Advocates with clear and straightforward arguments to be used in these kinds of situations where gender as a subject is challenged and questioned, particularly in the context of mine action.

Arabic / Croatian / English / French / Sinhala / Spanish / Tamil

2. ADVOCACY PAMPHLET:

A short advocacy pamphlet on gender and mine action for the Gender Advocates to be used in their local communities, but also in national, regional and international contexts. The pamphlet gives some indications on why local women’s grass roots organisations could involve in mine action and how mine action will benefit from adopting an inclusive, gender sensitive approach.

Arabic / Croatian / English / French / Sinhala / Spanish / Tamil

3. REPORT “Gender and Landmines – From Concept to Practice":

The publication shows that when a gender perspective is applied in mine action all actors generally benefit. It emphasises how little it takes to gender mainstream,

English / French / Spanish

4. SUMMARY of the main points in the report

The pamphlet summarises the main points of the report “Gender and Landmines – From Concept to Practice” and demystifies a certain number of myths on gender.

Arabic / Croatian / English / French / Sinhala /

Spanish / Tamil

5. A CHECKLIST on gender and mine action

The checklist developed by the Geneva International Center for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) emphasises the crucial linkages between mine action and development and recalls all necessary measures to be looked at to ensure non discriminatory and sustainable mine action.

6. MAPPING of relevant mine action contacts by country

7. Evaluation Form for the Kit

To help evaluate and improve the use and usefulness of the advocacy kit, feedback is needed from the organisations using the kit. Please fill in an evaluation form and send it back to infogmapch
